Jim Scannella

2009 SRVHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Jim Scannella, Class of 1979:

Jim is the last of our three State Champions in track to be elected to the SRVHS Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim was a State Champion in the 120 yard High Hurdles and placed second in the 330 yard Low Hurdles. Jim was voted to the Adidas High School All-American Team for Hurdles and was an outstanding two-way football player as well. Jim has three school records in track (110 HH, 330 LH, 4 x 100 Relay) and one in football (99 yard touchdown catch) that still stand today.

After High School, Jim culminated a great college track career by qualifying and competing in the Olympic Trails and being named MVP at UC Berkeley.

The many records Jim has recorded in the late 70’s and early 80’s are numerous. In addition to the above, he led SRVHS to a second place finish at state, holds SRVHS records in 120yd High Hurdles, as well as 330yd Low Hurdles.

As a football player he was one of only two juniors to start every game and was part of the 1979 EBAL championship team. He was EBAL first team defense, first team offense (with an average 19.9 yards per catch) and had his record long catch all in the same year.

His track career continued in college as Collegiate All-American 4 x 400M relay (still 2nd all-time at Cal), Pac-10 400M IH champion (still on top 10 at Cal). In 1084 he was MVP and later qualified and competed in the Olympic trials.

Jim coaches hurdlers at the HS level where he has coached to state meets. He was also a naval aviator from 1985-93. Jim now works in manufacturing sales and lives in South Carolina with his wife and two children.
