Mike Caldwell

2011 SRVHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Mike Caldwell, Class of 1989:

Mike “Flash 80” Caldwell was a three year varsity starter on the Football team as a wide receiver and strong safety. Tall, strong and fast, Mike used those attributes along with great focus to haul in any pass thrown in his direction. By the time Mike left SRV, he was the EBAL’s all-time leader in 6 categories. After the season, he was voted to the All-East Bay team on both offense and defense, and 2nd team All-State as a receiver. Mike was also a standout Baseball player as a two year varsity starter in center field. As a senior, he was 2nd in the EBAL in batting average, hits, and runs scored. He also stole 23 bases.

After a High School Football career that included 132 catches, 2,038 yards, and 26 touchdowns, Mike took his considerable talents to the University of California. As a starting wide receiver at Cal, Mike had a fine career that still has him perched among the top 10 all-time in four receiving categories, including sixth all-time in both career receptions and single season receiving yards. But his athletic career did not end there. Mike spent two memorable seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receiver and kick returner. Few can say they played alongside Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Steve Young and earned a Super Bowl ring. Although if that’s the company you keep, you’re odds of earning a ring are quite good.

Mike was inducted into the Tri Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Today, Mike is a Project Development Manager in Arizona for SunPower Corporation. He and his wife, Janine have two boys, Gavin and Ethan.
