Period 7
San Ramon Valley Period 7

2009-2010

San Ramon Valley High School is very excited to launch our “Period 7” program. This enrichment and remediation program is intended to provide ALL students at San Ramon Valley with an opportunity for educational growth to meet their individual needs.  We hope that the information below will help to answer some of your questions regarding program logistics.

WHEN WILL PERIOD 7 MEET?:
Period 7 will meet three-days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:10 pm.

WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND?:
We have many different opportunities for students based on their needs, and all students regardless of their grades are expected to be in attendance for Period 7.

WILL ATTENDANCE BE TAKEN?:
For students who are athletes, freshman or who have more than 1 “F” we will be taking attendance and tracking them a bit more closely. All other students won’t have attendance taken, but will be expected to take advantage of the many activities we will have available for them.

CAN STUDENTS COME AND GO DURING PERIOD 7?:
Students will be expected to remain with a single teacher for the duration of Period 7 and may not come and go between activities during the 30 minute period.

WHEN WILL STUDENTS FIND OUT THEIR PERIOD 7 ASSIGNMENTS?:
On Friday, February 19th, all students will receive a letter telling them what room they are to report to if they are in the group that is having attendance taken (athletes, freshman and students with 1 or more “F”s) .

All other students will receive a letter explaining that they are in the “free choice” group. The letter will outline that these students can choose from many different activities during 7th period. For example, they can go to a teacher for extra help, they can earn volunteer hours for tutoring other students, they can hold a study group, they can work independently and get a head start on their homework, they can go to enrichment activities that take classroom topics to the next level (for example social studies is going to do a program on the archeological find on campus), they can go to the college career center and work on college admissions or SAT prep etc., they can join an academic Co-curricular activity like speech, academic decathlon, robotics etc.

Students can choose what ever best fits their individual needs.  This is a unique opportunity for students to either get some extra help, some extra study time, or to challenge themselves in a new way.

HOW CAN WE FIND OUT WHAT IS BEING OFFERED DURING PERIOD 7?:
Each week a schematic by department will be posted on this link outlining what activities will be happening in various rooms across campus (see links on the top right of this page).   Students and parents should check here often to see the main opportunities available to them.

Period 7 activites are in four main categories:

FRESHMEN ADVISORY:  All freshmen are mandated to attend freshmen advisory during Period 7.
  1. Mondays: students will attend a freshmen focused enrichment class on selected topics such as study skills and academic planning. Students will meet with their freshman advisory teacher as well as their two link crew leaders.
  2. Wednesdays: Students will have study hall where they will have the opportunity to work silently and independently on their homework assignments. Students may also work with their classroom teachers through the “teacher pull-out” program. See below.
  3. Thursdays: Students with one or more “F’s” on their four-week progress report will have Guided Study Hall. Students with no “F’s” will have a Student Choice period. See descriptions below for guidelines for Guided Study Hall and Student Choice.
ATHLETIC STUDY HALL:All athletes will attend Athletic Study Hall during Period 7 while they are in season.
  1. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays all athletes will attend Athletic Study Hall with their respective coaches. They will be expected to work quietly on their classroom assignments.
  2. Students may also work with their classroom teachers through the “teacher pull-out” program. See below.
GUIDED STUDY: All students with 1 or more “F’s” after the 3-week mark will attend guided study hall.

  2. Students may also work with their classroom teachers through the “teacher pull-out” program. See below.
  3. Student in guided study hall will have their grades checked every 3 weeks.  Once they have raised their grades to all "C's or better" they will no longer be mandated to attend guided study.
STUDENT CHOICE: Students not mandated to attend one of the above programs will be expected to participate in one of the following school activities. **
  1. Teacher Office Hours: Students may work in a small group with a teacher in a tutorial setting.
  2. Extra help Workshops: Teachers will hold workshops for students who may not have fully grasped a concept or idea in the classroom and want extra practice and work to strengthen their skills.
  3. Enrichment Activity/Lab/Lecture: Teachers will host special activities for students who are interested in going beyond the classroom curriculum and exploring topics in a more in-depth sense.
  4. Academic Co-curricular activities: Students may participate in academic co-curricular activities such as robotics, debate, Model United Nations, Mock Trial, Science Alliance, Environmental Engineering Academy.
