Michael Kopp

2011 SRVHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Michael Kopp, Class of 1987:

If you start by mentioning that Michael was an undefeated California High School State Wrestling Champion, with an impressive 37 – 0 won/loss record in 1987, it’s easy to see why he is included in this year’s Hall of Fame class.

With that success came many personal honors. Michael was both the Tri-Valley Herald and Oakland Tribune’s Male Winter Athlete of the Year.

Wrestling USA Magazine named him as an Honorable Mention High School All-American. Michael was also the 1987 California State Freestyle Champion, which is Olympic style wrestling.

Michael also enjoyed great success as a Wrestler in the years leading up to 1987. As a freshman, he placed third in the EBAL as a member of the varsity team. As a sophomore, he placed third in the NCS and qualified for the State Meet. He backed that up as a junior by placing 2nd in the NCS and once again, qualified for the State Meet. Michael was also a three year starter on the varsity Football team, earning 1st Team All-League status as an offensive guard.

In college, Michael was a 1st team varsity wrestler for Cal State Bakersfield in 1988, and Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1989, both NCAA Division I schools.

Today, Michael volunteers his time helping people recover from substance abuse and addiction problems. He is also an active member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, a non-profit organization that works towards more safe, efficient and green transportation.
