CLASS OF 2010

Parents .... please read the letter below

Senior Parents

When you signed the Grad Night Permission slip,

you committed to picking your student up at the conclusion of Grad Night

Drivers who have been awake for 24 hours have an equivalent driving performance to a person who has a blood alcohol content of 0.1 and is 7 times more likely to have an accident

Driving While Fatigued:

Mandatory parent pick-up started in 2009. Sadly, at the conclusion of our 2008 Grad Night, one graduate flipped his truck and another hit a tree head-on. Both had fallen asleep at the wheel at approximately 5:30am. Thankfully, neither was seriously injured. Read more about the incident below.

Please make every effort to drop your student off prior to graduation so he/she does NOT have a car to drive home at 5:00am. Parent pick-up is MANDATORY. Please pick up your student or coordinate with other parents. Parent Pick-Up is located in the Senior Lot.

Drugs and Alcohol:

Please make every effort to help your student understand that this is their last high school experience. Being drug and alcohol free will help make this memorable.

Possession or use of drugs or alcohol is illegal and grounds for ejection from Grad Night. There will be a breathalyzer in use. If found in possession, parent/guardians will be notified; the student will be held for pick-up. Police may also be contacted.

Belongings and Medication:

Students have been encouraged to leave backpacks and purses at home (no swimming this year). Each student will be assigned a small storage basket that will be kept in a secure location; containing their personal need items/medications. If, during the course of the event, a student needs something from his/her basket, a parent volunteer will retrieve it. Students will not be permitted to consume any medication that is not in its original, labeled packaging/bottle.

Medical Personnel:

From 8:00pm to 5:00am there will be 3-4 licensed medical professionals on-site. If you have any specific needs or questions, please call:

The National Highway Traffic  http://www.ehow.com/how_5058548_avoid-driver-fatigue.html" \l "#" \t "_blank Safety Administration (NHTSA) calculates that drowsy or fatigued driving causes at least approximately 100,000 police-reported crashes and kills more than 1,550 Americans each year. Sleepiness slows the driver's reaction time and decreases awareness. Drowsiness can also impair the driver's judgment and increases the risks of crashing

A study conducted by the Adelaide Centre for Sleep Research shown that drivers who have been awake for 24 hours have an equivalent driving performance to a person who has a BAC (blood alcohol content) of 0.1 g/100ml, and is seven times more likely to have an accident. Further, the study showed that drivers run an even higher risk of succumbing to driver fatigue between 2am and 6am

letter from a former SRVHS graduate's father ...

Greetings,

At 5:15AM in June of 2008, we were awakened by a frantic neighbor informing us that our daughter had crashed head on into a tree. She had left Grad Night just 10 minutes earlier and had fallen asleep at the wheel. I had spoken with her just 20 minutes earlier to see how she was doing. She desperately wanted to be in her bed, after a long and tiring 24 hours; she did not want to wait for me to get there. It was a judgment error on both our parts; one that I should not have allowed possible. She had fallen asleep, plain and simple; the Danville police later cleared her of any DUI suspicion.

Our daughter is finishing her second year at UC Santa Barbara. She has had two wonderful years of college life. But this is a life that could have just as easily ended just a short twenty-four months ago. This is a life that my wife and I, friends and family could still be deeply mourning.

I'm normally a cautious person, and fortunately had provided her with a crash-worthy car, but this error, allowing her to drive home, could have cost her life, while profoundly changing ours forever. The air bag and seat belt made it possible for her to survive this horrific accident. We are eternally grateful that she survived.

Our out-of-pocket expenses exceeded $10K. Insurance/deductible decisions are inherently a gamble; this is one that we lost…but the biggest gamble that we took was with our daughter’s life by letting her drive herself to and from Grad Night. Please do not make the same mistake.

Wishing you and your new graduate a happy and safe graduation,

~A still very grateful father~
