The issue of financial aid is complicated for most families. Based upon a student’s citizenship, family’s financial situation, residency, and academic or other achievements, a student may (or may not) be given scholarships or need-based financial aid. The following is a quick primer on the two major types of aid:

Need-Based Aid
Financial aid that is based on a student’s financial situation is considered to be need based aid. Most need based aid is provided by the US federal government. A FAFSA form must be filed in order to determine eligibility for Federal Financial Aid.

Merit-based aid
Merit-based aid is based on a student’s achievements in areas such as academics or special talents such as music or athletics. The application process and availability of merit based aid to attend a US college or university is available on individual college websites.
