Art of Video

The Art of Video class is designed to teach the basics of video as an artistic medium. You are expected to make work that is more than just an exercise to show that you understand how to use the camera. Instead the goal is for you to make meaningful work that shows creativity and well thought out projects. Over the duration of the semester you will learn:

1. Basic functions of the video camera
2. The main theories in shot development, composition
3. Recording audio for video
4. Editing in camera
5. Editing using the computer
6. Lighting Techniques
7. Chroma Key Lighting (green screens)
8. Basic Special effects

Advanced Students:
1. DVD Authoring
2. Continued Documentary skills
3. Title sequences
4. Advanced Special effects


There are many projects that we are going to tackle over the semester. All of them require you to pay attention during the lectures and take notes. I will be giving you a handout before each project that tells you the criteria for the project. You will be graded on how well you meet the criteria for each project.

Projects:

1. In Camera Edit- putting together a sequence in the camera
2. Still picture edit- using still pictures to make a story
3. 2 minute video- your first edit with transitions
4. Music Videos
5. Documentary
6. Genre Based Projects
7. Scary Movies
8. 5 minute final project- Applying all of the material covered in the class
9. Script Writing assignment
10. Storyboard assignments

Rules:
1. No eating or drinking
2. Do not use the computer in any way other than what you have been instructed
3. NO HOMOPHOBIC, RACIST, SEXIST remarks will be tolerated
4. Videos are to be PG
5. No talking during lectures
6. Be here on time
7. I follow the handbook rules for cutting, tardiness, and dress code. READ IT.
8. Be quiet in the halls and around other classrooms

Bullying and Harassment:
  District policy states that harassment in or out of the classroom is not to be tolerated. Harassment based on race, ethnicity, able-bodiedness, sexuality, perceived sexuality, gender, gender expression, monetary standing, religion or faith-base, or any other factor will be reported to the administration and dealt with accordingly. This includes slang such as 'that’s so gay' or 'that’s retarded.' Both are considered hate speech.

Grading:
60% Projects
10% Participation/Attendance
Students are deducted 2 participation points every time they are late or not participating in class time activities (talking out of turn during critiques). Unexcused absences will be a -5 point deduction.
5% Weekly write-ups
15% Quizzes
10% Final

Weekly Write-ups:
Every week there is an assignment on my school website that needs to be completed and turned in by Friday of that week. If school does not meet on Friday then the assignment will be collected on the following day that school is in session. The assignments can be printed out and filled in, or you can copy the questions onto a piece of binder paper and answer the questions.
