Rick McMillen

2009 SRVHS Athletic Hall of Fame

Rick McMillen, DDS, Class of 1956:

In just two years, Rick amassed 12 Varsity Letters in 6 different sports at San Ramon. That’s two varsity sports per season. Rick was always a natural athlete. As a 12 year old, Rick was second in the nation in his age group for the 50 yard freestyle in swimming.

In College, Rick was the Associated Press Athlete of the Week at Stanford for his 186 yard rushing performance in football against Washington. Rick is a Dentist and lives with his wife, Betty, who was also his high school sweetheart, in Fort Bragg, CA.

According to Rick, his love of sports and competition started in the pool of all places. As a 12 year old, he swam in the Far Western Swim Championships, winning two events and recording the third fastest time in the nation for the 50 free. Though he wouldn’t swim competitively again until he was a junior, his athletic interests were destined to branch out beyond the pool. High school afforded him the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports. At SRVHS he played basketball, tennis, track, cross country, and swam.

After high school Rick headed to Stanford on a football scholarship. In a very memorable game vs. Washington Rick excelled to the point of being featured as “Back of the Week” in Sports Illustrated.

While in dental school, Rick continued playing sports…Rugby. He even continued to play while serving in Okinawa for the Air Force.

Sports still play a huge role in Rick’s life as he has run triathlons, and decathlons. At 72 Rick is still a sportsman, though he lets his horse do the work these days!
